One of the first worries homeowners have after a water loss is whether they'll have to leave their home. The good news: for many losses, you can stay. But it genuinely depends on the severity and type of damage. Here's how to think about it.
Minor to moderate losses: usually you can stay
For a contained water loss, say a clean-water leak affecting one or two rooms, most homeowners can remain in the unaffected areas of the home while we work. The drying equipment runs in the impacted space and life mostly goes on around it.
When relocation may be necessary
Temporary relocation becomes more likely when the loss involves Category 3 'black' water, significant mold, structural repairs, or when essential systems like power, water, or the kitchen and bathrooms are out of service. Safety and basic livability drive the decision more than anything else.
How long might it take?
Drying alone typically runs a few days. If reconstruction is needed afterward, the timeline extends based on the scope. We'll give you a realistic estimate up front so you can plan, and if your policy includes loss-of-use coverage, temporary lodging may be reimbursable.
We'll tell you honestly
When we assess your loss, we'll give you a straight answer about whether staying is safe and practical based on the actual conditions, not a one-size-fits-all rule. Your family's safety and comfort come first.
