Filing a water damage claim feels overwhelming when your home is already in chaos. Done right, the process is straightforward. Here are the steps that give your claim the best chance.
1. Document everything immediately
Before you move or remove anything, take photos and video of the damage, the source if visible, and affected belongings. This record is the backbone of your claim.
2. Mitigate further damage
Insurers expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent more damage, such as stopping the water and starting professional drying. Keep receipts for anything you spend. A restoration company can handle mitigation and document it to insurance standards.
3. Call your insurer and start the claim
Report the loss promptly with your policy number on hand. Ask what your policy covers, what your deductible is, and whether the cause (sudden vs. gradual, water vs. flood) is covered.
4. Work with the adjuster, and let your restorer help
The adjuster assesses the loss and approves a scope of work. A restoration company that documents moisture readings, equipment logs, and a full scope, and communicates directly with your adjuster, takes most of that burden off you. EZR bills your carrier directly.
Know the flood exception
Damage from rising water and storm surge usually requires a separate flood policy, not standard homeowners coverage. We'll tell you honestly when a loss looks like it falls under flood insurance.
